The Adventures of Tintin (Les Aventures de Tintin) is a series of comic strips devised by Belgian artisan Herge the pen name of Georges Remi (1907 1983). The series initial appeared in French in Le Petit Vingtieme, a children’s supplement to the Belgian newspaper Le Vingtieme Siecle on 10 January 1929. Set in a painstakingly researched world almost mirroring our own, Herge’s Tintin series proceeds to be a favored of readers and critics similar 80 years later.
The hero of the series is Tintin, a young Belgian reporter. He is aided in his adventures from the beginning by his faithful fox terrier dog Snowy (Milou in French). Later, ordinary additions to the cast included the brash, cynical and grumpy Captain Haddock, the bright but hearing-impaired Professor Calculus (Professeur Tournesol) and other colorful supporting characters such as the incompetent detectives Thomson and Thompson (Dupond et Dupont). Herge himself features in assorted of the comics as a background character; as do his assistants in a lot of instances.
The success of the series saw the serialized strips collected into a series of albums (24 in all), spun into a successful magazine and adapted for film and theatre. The series is one of the most usual European comics of the 20th century, with translations published in over 50 languages and more than 200 million copies of the books sold to date.
The comic strip series has long been admired for it is clean, expressive drawings in Herge’s signature ligne claire style. Engaging, well-researched plots straddle a potpourri of genres: swashbuckling adventures with parts of fantasy, mysteries, political thrillers, and science fiction. The stories within the Tintin series always feature slapstick humor, accompanied in later albums by sophisticated satire, and political and cultural commentary.

Cuba Variety pack

Handy for travel, the Cuba Variety pack is also an excellent way to sample some of the various scents from Cuba at a reasonable price,and since I enjoy most of them and travel 200+ days a year, I’ve bought several, as well as larger sizes for home. I especially like the spicy Red, and the Brown and Gold wear well throughout the day.

Unexpected, emotional, insightful

It’s said that we lose celebrities in groups of three, and as we move from child to teenager to adult, we count the groups of “older folk” who spend their lives entertaining us, then retreat into a quiet existence for a few final years and make headlines as they pass on. “Were they still alive?” we wonder, “what a full and long life they lived, how sad to have died so alone.” We rarely realize that celebrities are living, breathing people, with complex friendships and relationships greatly affected by their passing.

Close But No Cigar revealed to me that the George Burns the public knew was very much the way he lived, spoke and brought joy in his private life. It’s clear that both Ms. Miller and GB were both profoundly affected by each other, and I’m pleased to know that GB had someone who loved him so greatly at the end.

Thank you, Ms. Miller, for making me think about strong, lasting relationships which resist convention, and illustrating for me an amazing love story I would never have otherwise believed. I’ve talked about this book to almost everyone I’ve encountered since I began reading it, and it’s kept me up late at night, on the telephone with distant friends I don’t see or communicate with enough. You’ve opened the door to some of your most special memories, and invited me right in… ‘Kid, your the nicest woman I’ll ever meet.’

I was a participant in the Kids Next Door in l968

I was a member of the group Lisa mentions, “The Kids Next Door”, back in 1968; I think I may even see my teenaged face in the shadows in one photograph taken of she and George Burns at the Palmer House in Chicago. George had us on the floor laughing backstage, night after night, with his anecdotes about his friendship with Jack Benny and his practical jokes…Melissa Miller has contributed a warm, touching and delightful book to the Burns legacy; I recommend it to everyone who loved this legendary comic actor.

A surprising addition to the George Burns legacy.

I opened it to look at the pictures and wound up reading it for the story. It is witty, personal, and often quite moving. Maybe all those jokes about George Burns and younger women weren’t that far off; and, in this case, he wasn’t running with any bimbo, that’s for sure.

Fills all your butterfly clipart needs!

Victorian clipart: I liked this volume better than the bird illustrations CD-ROM. The butterflies resemble ‘scientific’ artwork of the period. The illustrations look great on envelopes, letters, CD jewelbox labels, you find a use. The color pics seem to print faster than Dover’s B&W ones, too. As with the other Dover CD-ROMS, you can pull the images off the disk without installing them on your HD.

great value, great build – why wait?

I have a handful of $1-2 cutters which should just be burned and have a nice Xikar cutter which costs several times what this cutter costs and which I use only at home because I am afraid to take it out with me and lose it.

Enter the cuban crafters cutter… I had heard it was nice, and for 13 bucks, why not try it. At worst, I’m out the price of a nice cigar, and at best, I now have a new traveling cutter.

I have to say, I was very pleasantly surprised when I got the cutter in the mail. The packaging for the cutter alone was nicely done. The cutter itself is very solid and has a good weight to it, feels like it can withstand some heavy usage.

The cutter has a back to it to prevent people from cutting too much off the cigar. For those with torpedoes, it has a small hole to give more space to handle the torpedo tip. I found that I needed to cut a torpedo twice in order to get the desired cut to the cigar. While slightly annoying to have to cut twice, the quality of the cut won me over… crisp, clean and smooth.

In summary, want a superb cigar cutter that costs a fraction of the other popular cutters? Want a cutter with solid build and superb clean cuts? And lastly, want a cutter you won’t bang your head against a wall if you leave at a bar or party?

…. then this is your cutter.

My favorite cutter – for a month

I like the idea of this cutter – nice end cut but without worries of cutting too far – but am less than impressed. It seemed fine at first, but the blades dulled quickly and it now tears at the cigar cap rather than giving it a nice clean cut. I’d say it gave nice, clean cuts for maybe the first 50 or so cigars. Now I bring it out every time there is guy’s cigar night at my house and no one uses it.

I guess I got a bad one. Blades not sharp or precise.

I bought this based on all the positive reviews. Well, lucky me, I’m the first person to get one that doesn’t cut very well. It is a combination of two problems. First, the blades are not that sharp. And second, as the blades close they do not come together neatly, in other words, looking at the cutter from the side, one blade seems to be cutting high and the other blade is cutting low. This is causing a weird “rooftop” shaped cut that requires a lot of force. The cigar head looks like it has been pinched off rather than cut. I tried several cigars thinking I might be doing something wrong but the results were the same each time. I’ve gotten better results with a cheap plastic-handled single blade cutter than this one. I figure it must be just this particular one that I got because whenever I see Bryan Glynn use it on CigarObsession.com it seems like he is using it pretty effortlessly. With mine, I have to use both hands to squeeze it closed. Well, at least it was not too expensive.
